My illustration this week for Amelia's Magazine is for Preloved Reloved. This is a blog created by Kimberley-Marie Sklinar who is raising raising awareness of ethical buying and raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, by saving her cash and buying only second-hand clothes for a year. I was asked to illustrate vintage dresses, skirts and coats and to highlight the recycling message behind the blog I chose a recognisable typeface to match each decade dating back to 1950.

This has been my first fashion piece and it was fun to experiment with textures and revisit my graphic design background to think of a way of interpreting the theme.
This was my initial sketch, which, as the process went, on generated the idea for the use of typefaces.
At one point I had a more textured background but felt that it detracted too much from the three figures. In the end I chose the orange background for the article as that burnished orange has such a retro feel to it. I admit that it is quite a bold statement colour but I think it does create the right mood.
I even used recycling for the image! The texture used for the skirt is from one of my favourite bags, which has faithfully carried all sorts of arty paraphernalia to and from college. The material for the coat and skirt are from photographs taken of some clothes destined for Oxfam.
Hope you've enjoyed my post ;)

I then drew the coat and skirt, experimented with different typefaces and then couldn't make up my mind about the background! You can see my visual ruminations here:
