Amelia's Magazine 16 November 2011

It's been a while since I posted some illustrations and it's been good to return to such a photogenic and whimsical talent such as Roxy Rawson.  These images are for an interview with Roxy by Kat Phan and can be read in full in Amelia's Magazine.

Roxy is classically trained in the piano and violin, a plucky plucker whose music has been described as beautifully peculiar.  Amelia's Magazine has introduced me to some fabulous aspiring independent musicians (thanks Kat!) and I'm glad to be able to add Roxy to my list of discoveries.

Amelia's Magazine 4 July 2011

This illustration is for a review of Benjamin Francis Leftwich's debut album 'Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm', which is released today.  What is so special about illustrating for Amelia's Magazine is the sheer number of new interesting and talented musical artists I have been introduced to.

For inspiration I listened to the track 'Box of Stones'.  In fact I ended up playing it on loop because it's so hauntingly beautiful!  I highly recommend you get your cash out and your hands on it just as I am about to!

You can read Amelia Gregory's full review of the album here.      v

This article by Hannah Bullivant for Amelia's Magazine is about the stand taken by the Craftivist Collective and Climate Rush in response to Government's plans to increase rail fares by 31% over the next five years.

Hannah points out that between 1997 and 2008, the cost of travelling by train rose by 46% in comparison to the 26% rise of travelling by car.  As it is, UK rail fares are 50% more expensive than European fares.

How can this policy possibly encourage people to travel by a "greener" mode of transport?

 27 February 1932 - 23 March 2011
Dame Elizabeth Taylor by Matilde Sazio
This illustration is part of a tribute to an incandescent beauty considered to be one of the greatest screen actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age but also remembered as a fearless activist despite the most astonishing illnesses, which she carried with such bravery and dignity.  What a life she had and what love she had to give.  With her passing we have the end of an era.

I'd like to think that in death she has been reunited with the man she couldn't live with or without, but always the love of her life, Richard Burton.  Reckon they have champagne in heaven cos I think I can hear the corks popping..?

RIP, no more pain to wrack your beautiful body.

This illustration for LFW is of a collaboration between fashion designer Joanne Hynes and artist Helen Steele and my final contribution to LFW/2011.  I have tried to convey the feel of the coming together of layers, metaphorically speaking with the partnership and through the incorporation of Helen's own paintings onto Joanne's designs.  The whole show itself was a fabulously bold mesh of texture, pattern and colour.

Back to music, after a long LFW interval, with Lulu and the Lampshades. Jessica Furthseth who has reviewed their EP for Amelia's Magazine has summed up their music perfectly, it really does make you crave summer, festivals and ice lollies, a light in the dark eh? *sigh*.

Amelia's Magazine 3 March 2011

I thought this was going to be my last LFW entry and felt rather sad about it, but lo Amelia put a call-out for some weekend illustrating so expect one more post. These illustrations are from the Cooperative Designs collection and the review is by fellow illustrator Naomi Law. Do check out the article.

This colourful collection of capes from MaxJenny Forslund is to be applauded in that this enthusiatic Danish designer works with recycled material such as bamboo, coconut, fabric made out of PET bottles or old cassette tapes.  Wastage is also kept as low as possible, left-overs from PET fabric are made into MAXJENNY for Minis, a children's range of rain ponchos and necklaces are fashioned from jersey cut-offs.

Ah yes, LFW posts are not over yet, here's an illustration of one of Krystof Strozyna's designs whose clean lines and silhouettes made me think of 60s/space age fashion. You can see more of the collection and the full review in Amelia's Magazine.

Hels Martin who is Amelia's Magazine's Music Editor put out a call for contributors to illustrate from a selection of Oscar nominees, films etc.  I immediately chose Helena Bonham Carter (in fact my fingers couldn't type fast enough to snag her) whose talent and eccentricity I have long admired and whose fabulous tresses makes my own abundant hair seem, er, normal...

Helena Bonham Carter by Matilde Sazio
Since Helena had recently won the Bafta for best supporting actress for her role as the Queen Mother in The King's Speech, I couldn't help but include the award in the illustration.  The Oscar is at the back as a nod to what is looming ahead with the red backdrop signifying the red carpet.  I love Helena and I hope it shows in my interpretation.  Fingers crossed she bags an Oscar too!

Stepping away from LFW for a moment, with two rather contrasting illustrations of the singer Nancy Elizabeth.  You can read Helen Martin's interview with Nancy in Amelia's Magazine.  Keep an eye out for Helen, I predict a very brilliant career...

London Fashion Week and my chance to cut my teeth on fashion illustration.  Hels Martin is on the ground at LFW also cutting her teeth writing up the reviews for Amelia's Magazine as well as blogging about her experiences at the most sartorially daunting venue in the country right now.  Just how do YOU dress for LFW?!  As I write it's raining, this for me, would require applying several containers worth of frizz ease on my hair, unless big hair is on trend?  I lose track...

Here is my first catwalk cut.

...and now I want more!  Tsk, this fashion illustrating business is addictive.

Another musical illustration, and one inspired by the wonderfully whimsical world of God's Little Eskimo and his second album "Said The Owl To The Mouse".

God's Little Eskimo by Matilde Sazio
I recommend you listen to his mesmerising voice.  In Johnny Eskimo's own words, "Music for a teddy bear's picnic. A slightly wistful, slightly sinister teddy bear's picnic".

Read Helen Martin's fabulous review in Amelia's Magazine. Helen's blog is also a very fine read!
